MONTPELIER, VERMONT: Arthur D. Aldrich, 80, died September 3, 2007. He was born October 14, 1926 to Darwin and Grace Heath Aldrich. He held a degree in civil engineering from University of Vermont, and was a retired civil engineer for the Vermont Highway Department with 39 years of service. He was interested in genealogy, Vermont history, and national and state railroad systems. He was a member and past director of the Montpelier Historical Society, the Association of Professional Engineers, the Vermont Historical Society, and several railway history associations. Survivors include a daughter, Susan Spencer of Montpelier; a son, George, of Royalton; and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Cross Aldrich. Burial was at Berlin Corners Cemetery by Guare and Sons Funeral Home.

BETHEL, VERMONT: James R. Ashley, 65, died November 10, 2008. He was born July 29, 1943 to Robert and Laura Kribstock Ashley. He was a carpenter, and had also worked on a shrimp boat in Florida. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post #66. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Michelle Ashley; and his parents. Interment was at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Day Funeral Home.

LEICESTER, VERMONT: Allen Leonard Atwood, 76, died May 17, 2009. He was born December 29, 1932 to the late Harold E. and Blanche McDonald Atwood. He was the owner of Atwood Trucking Rubbish Removal, and also worked at Vermont Marble Co., Savage Arms, and Howe Scale Company. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Family members include his wife, Joan Ann Corey Atwood; five children, Allen Atwood, Jr. of Sudbury, Susan Barrows of Morrisville, Joallen Vincent of Cornwall, Randall Atwood of Addison, and Gary Atwood of Hydeville; six sisters, Glenna Buzzell of Pittsford, Evelyn Lake of Waltham, Wilma Croumey of Glens Falls, NY, Betty Osmer of Bridgewater Corners, Doris Aldrich of Caroleen, SC, and Helen Hale of South Londonerry; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Godette; and two brothers, Harley Atwood and Theron Atwood. RUTLAND, VERMONT: Edith Valach Baird, 83, died February 16, 2008. She was born August 19, 1924 to Matthew and Erma Kohut Valach. She was a graduate of Rutland Hospital School of Nursing, and was a registered nurse. She was a 4-H leader and a former camp nurse at Lake Elfin 4-H Camp. She was also a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and was a Meals On Wheels volunteer for over 14 years. She was a former member of the Nickwackett Home Demonstration Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Robinson of Brandon; two sons, Richard Baird of Albuquerque, NM, and Robert Baird of Chittenden; a sister, Margaret Spaulding of Rutland; her nieces and nephews; and 4 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gezella (Gee) Parker and Irma Costa; and five brothers, Samuel, William, Clarence (Gay), Elemil (Al), and Victor. Services were held at Good Shepard Lutheran Church. Burial was at Hillside Cemetery under the direction of Barnard Funeral Home.

FERRISBURGH, VERMONT: George D. Bennett, 68, died December 14, 2007. He was born October 18, 1939 to Harold and Ruth Morrison Bennett. He was a former town lister and St. George school board member. He was a Mason. CORNWALL, VERMONT: Alice E. Blaise, 75, died May 16, 2008. She was born January 29, 1933 to the late Ernest and Isabelle McAdam LaPete. She attended Cornwall Congregational Church, where she was a deacon; she was also a former choir member, and served on the Business Committee. She volunteered as a Grey Lady at Porter Medical Center. Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Arthur F. Blaise; a daughter, Elsie Johnson of Middlebury; a son, Brian of Cornwall; a brother, Wilfred LaPete of Newhaven; two sisters, Irene Kelly of Winooski, and Carolyn Lussier of Cornwall; her nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Arthur F. "Skippy" Blaise II; a sister, Marion; three brothers, Warren, Ernest Jr., and Maurice; and her parents. Services were held at Cornwall Congregational Church. Interment was at Cornwall Central Cemetery under the direction of Sanderson Funeral Service.

LYNDONVILLE, VERMONT: Marie Paule Caron, 80, died September 11, 2008. She was born October 3, 1927 in St. Benjamin, Quebec, Canada to Joseph and Corrine Breton. She enjoyed embroidery and cross-stitching, and visiting family members in Quebec. Survivors include five children and their spouses, Suzanne Caron Potter of Barre, Mary Caron Dionisio (Arthur) of Wheelock, Claude Caron (fiancée Terri Chaudoin) of St. Johnsbury, Louise Caron Vinton (fiance Ben Weisinger) of Lyndonville, and John and Donna Caron of Manchester, NH; 9 grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roland Caron; a son, Mark Caron; and an infant daughter, Colombe Caron. Services were held at St. Elizabeth Church. ENOSBURG FALLS, VERMONT: Arlene Drown, 81, died May 3, 2008 at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born November 3, 1926 in Franklin, VT to Lewis and Rosanna Degonyoun Mitiguy. She was a longtime resident of Enosburg Falls, and retired from the Enosburg Lockers after 23 years of service. She attended Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kermit D. and Susan Drown of Highgate; a stepson and his wife, Rodney and Patricia Drown of Pittsford; 2 granddaughters; and 2 step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlos D. Drown; her parents; two brothers, Arthur and Philip Clough; and a sister, Mildred Miller. COLCHESTER, VERMONT: Susan J. Coady Fontaine died September 24, 2006. She was born June 29, 1925 to James and Maryellen O'Keefe Coady. She attended George Washington University, and was a bookkeeper. At the time of her passing, she was keeping the books for the family business, the Rusty Scuffer Restaurant. During World War II, she was a codebreaker in the OSS office. Survivors include a daughter, Deborah (Lewis) Tetlow of Bedford, NH; two sons, Arthur (Jennifer), and Jack (Eileen), all of Colchester; her siblings, William Coady, Jimmy Coady, Mary Saaristo, Janet Chase, Rita Chase, Abbie Coady, and Charlie Coady; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-granddaughters; her nieces and nephews; and her grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur L. Fontaine. Services were held at Holy Cross Church. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery by Ready Funeral Home.

She retired from Veterans Employment Service, and also worked for the Vermont State Employment Service. She was formerly active with the American Legion Auxiliary, Green Mountain Boys State, Sky Acres, and the Universalist Church. PITTSFORD, VERMONT: Robert A. "Bob" Godette, 68, died December 14, 2006. He was born June 15, 1938 to William and Pauline Atwood Godette. He was a retired carpenter, and formerly worked for Birch Hill Construction and Wright Construction. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed motorcycles, and liked to ride in the annual toy run. She and her husband operated Twin City Radio-TV Service. She attended Northwestern University, and formerly worked at the Chicago branch of the Bank of Montreal. She attended St. Augustine Catholic Church, and was a volunteer for Central Vermont Hospital, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Chemo Caps Project. Survivors include her children, Lucien J. PUTNEY, VERMONT: Carl Leroy Holt, 90, died February 14, 2007. He was born November 17, 1916 to the late Daniel and Helen Hunt Holt. He retired from Hamilton Standard Space and Life, and was a recipient of the Snoopy Space and Life Award. He was also a carpenter, and built two of the homes in which he resided. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening, and was a 50-year member of Enfield Masonic Lodge #28. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rose A. Kolodziej Holt; three daughters, Joyce White (Blair) of Enfield, CT, and Carol Maniscalchi (Vincent), and Linda Blank (Roy Jones), all of Putney; his nieces and nephews; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and his Shih-Tzu dog, Luke. She was a former employee of the National Bank of Greece, and had studied computerized banking. After coming to the U.S., she earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Marymount College, and operated her own consulting business. She is survived by a son, Sotiris I. BURLINGTON, VERMONT: Louis Edward Krieg, Sr., 79, died March 12, 2008. He was born August 16, 1928 to Louis Edel Krieg and Margaret Hogan Krieg. He attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He worked at Hazelett Strip Casting and Vermont Structural Steel, and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was also a commercial photographer and a member of the Vermont Professional Photographers. He is survived by a son, Lou Krieg II (Ann Pettyjohn) of Colchester; a daughter, Carol Ann Winfield (David) of Westford; a sister, Marge Kucel (John) of Gloversville; his nieces and nephews; and his grandchildren. SWANTON, VERMONT: Harlan J. LaFrance, 72, died March 12, 2006. He was born June 28, 1933 to the late George J. and Addie J. Rollo LaFrance. He worked at F.R. LaFayette Fence Co. for 46 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a Tribal Council member of the Abenaki Nation, and a former board member of the Sportsmen's Club of Franklin County. He was formerly a member of the VFW, the American Legion, and the Moose Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Florence Carter LaFrance; two sons, Chris LaFrance (Cindy) of Milton, and Paul Bell (Valerie) of Colchester; two daughters, Bonnie Pagliaro (Michael) of Beacon, NY, and Holly LaFrance (companion Juan Mier III) of Burlington; a stepson; three stepdaughters; a sister, Velma Billado of Richford; three brothers, Carlton LaFrance (Bertha), Louis La France, and Lawrence LaFrance, all of Highgate; his cousins; his nieces and nephews; 6 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of DeGoesbriand Hospital School of Nursing, and worked as head nurse at DeGoesbriand Hospital. She worked for ten years at the VA Hospital in White River Junction, and later worked at Mary Fletcher Hospital. Survivors include five children, Robert Looby, Jr. of Starksboro, Phyllis Looby of Ottawa, Canada, Elizabeth Barrett of Ireland, Thomas Looby of South Burlington, and Bernard Looby of Burlington; a sister, Alice Bodette of Addison; a brother-in-law, Clem Looby of South Burlington; her nieces and nephews; and 3 grandchildren. She retired from the Montpelier School System, and also worked as a teller at Capital Savings Bank, the Childrens' Store, and in the accounting department of the State of Vermont. She attended Christ Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband, George Matkowski; a daughter, Sharon (Douglas) Turner of Waitsfield; a son, Leslie of Montpelier; a brother, Rev. Cecil Wagstaff; 6 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren. Services were held at Christ Episcopal Church. BENNINGTON, VERMONT: Roland Vernon Monteith, 88, died June 9, 2010. He was born February 18, 1922 to Walter Scott Monteith and Elsie May True Monteith. He worked on a dairy farm. He was a frequent volunteer at the Bennington Monument, and participated in Bennington Project Independence. He is survived by several cousins; and his friends, including Shelley (Hight) Small of Athol, MA, and his caretakers, Denise Sauer of Pownal, and Anne Gatling of Bend, OR. MONTPELIER, VERMONT: Mary A. Nunn, 95, died April 8, 2009. She was born October 28, 1913 to Joseph and Vera Kurach Augustenovich. She held an degree in education from the University of Vermont. She was a longtime 3rd grade teacher at Union Elementary School, and also taught at Tunbridge Elementary School. She was a member and past president of the Montpelier Women's Club, and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a fundraiser for the Hugh O'Brien Youth Foundation, and enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, and entertaining. Survivors include a sister, Anne A. Fugliese of Windsor, CT; a niece; and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Nunn; and a brother, Walter J. Augusten. Burial was at Hope Cemetery under the direction of Barber and Lanier Funeral Home.

ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT: Patricia Packer, 88, died May 8, 2010. She was born May 21, 1921 to Charles L. and Mae Lacasse Rattigan. She had a career with Farmers Home Administration that spanned over 40 years. She was originally appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She and her husband farmed, and she also did housekeeping for several area homes. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, flower gardening, and puzzles. In May of 2005, she received a certificate from the governor recognizing her as the last surviving widow of a World War I veteran in Vermont. ZIEGLER, Jacqueline
MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT: Jacqueline C. Ziegler, 85, died November 29, 2008. She was born February 14, 1923 to the late John N. and Edna Schlesinger Stone. She was a former resident of Devon, PA. She attended the Boston Museum School and the Minneapolis Art Institute and the Boston Museum School. She was an artist who illustrated dozens of children's books, and painted hundreds of watercolor and oil portraits and still lifes. Her art was shown in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, and other locations. She was also a former dance teacher and an exhibition dancer for the Arthur Murray Show. She was a longtime collection chair for UNICEF in Chester County, PA, and a supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center. She enjoyed antiques, gardening, and reading. She is survived by a son, Larry Ziegler-Otero and wife Wanda Otero-Ziegler of Bridport; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James F. Ziegler; and a brother, Lawrence S. Cooke. A Quaker memorial service was held at Havurah House.
