FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA: Irene Ernestine Bertrand, 64, died January 2, 2003. She was born April 25, 1938 to Wilfred and Rose Trottier Bertrand. She enjoyed music and dancing. She is survived by a brother, Louis Bertrand of Fargo; two sisters, Theresa Tessier of Alta Loma, CA, and Gertrude Johnson of Booneville, AR; and 29 nieces and nephews. Marquart, Jr. and Pauline Zentner Marquart. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, travel, NASCAR racing, camping, fishing and playing cards. She often served as a prayer partner for confirmation candidates. MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA: Madeline Irene Christenson, 98, died December 26, 2009. She was born June 14, 1911 to Peter M. and Anna Chrest Christenson. She studied stenography, bookkeeping and office administration at Interstate Business College in Fargo. She formerly worked at the Burke County Auditor's Office and Dakota Transfer, and was a longtime employee of the North Dakota State Highway Department office. She attended Minot Lutheran Church, and enjoyed reading the Bible. She is survived by several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Geneva Christenson. Interment was at Rosehill Memorial Park under the direction of Thomas Family Funeral Home.
HALLSON, NORTH DAKOTA: Thelma C. Crowston, 92, died July 31, 2007. She was born October 7, 1914 to Frank and Elizabeth Loeser Pudil. She and her husband farmed in the Hallson area, where she lived for 72 years. She enjoyed baking, flower gardening, and quilting. Thelma was a member of Hallson Lutheran Church and Hallson Ladies' Aid. She is survived by a daughter, Judith (Dennis) Kemp of Park River, ND; a sister, Mildred Kotchman of Cavalier; her nieces and nephews; 6 grandchildren; and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John W. Crowston; a son, Errol; three brothers, Howard, Donald, and Leslie Pudil; and two sisters, Mae Crowston and Dorothy Geiger. DOUGLAS, NORTH DAKOTA: Christ Delzer, 92, died January 26, 2010. He was born August 11, 1917 to Henry and Katharina Delzer. He was a farmer. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a 4-H leader, a charter member of the Douglas Nifty Fifties, and served on the Douglas Township Board. He attended Douglas Methodist Church, joining the Garrison Congregational Church after the closing of the Douglas church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by three daughters, Phyllis (Dean) Albert of River Falls, WI, Donna (Mike) Jones of Indianapolis, IN, and Doris (Steve) Zidon of Grand Forks; four sons, David Delzer (fiance Linda) of Richfield, MN, Tim (Linda) Delzer of Douglas; Tom (Merna) of Garrison; and Jeff Delzer of Underwood; a brother, Ted Delzer of Fergus Falls, MN; a sister, Lorraine Nelson of Kalispell, MT; a son-in-law, Don Weninger (Rose) of Harvey; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Roberts of Minot, and June Roberts of Douglas; 18 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She and her husband were farmers and ranchers, and were longtime residesnts of Washburn. They took in several foster children. She formerly worked at the Red Fox Cafe, the Washburn Senior Center, the McLean County Museum, and the Washburn Library. She was a member of Washburn Baptist Church. BINFORD, NORTH DAKOTA: Mildred Lillian Goplen, 88, died September 10, 2008. She was born October 31, 1919 to George and Emma Albers Perry. She and her husband farmed in Griggs County, and then relocated to Binford. Following her husband's passing, she lived at Bethany Homes in Fargo. She attended Mable Lutheran Church in Sutton, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Binford. She was a Sunday School superintendent, choir member, and a member of the Ladies' Aid. She is survived by two sons, Sherman (Eileen) Goplen of Fargo, and Marvin Goplen of Drake; a brother, Eugene Perry of Fargo; a sister, Lucille Heinle of Gladstone; 3 grandchildren; and 5 nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arne Goplen; her parents; a sister, Evelyn Oster Morast; a daughter-in-law, Alice Goplen; and a sister-in-law, Annie Perry. She provided the telephone answering service for Evans Funeral Home for 40 years, and also worked at Borth and Speidel's Department Store, Farmers Union Oil, Farmers Union Credit Union, and Farmers Union Insurance. She was a charter Member of Grace Lutheran Church, and taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, quilting, gardening and flowers. She is survived by a sister, Alice Wolsky of Kensal, ND; her nieces and nephews; and 16 godchildren. FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA: Stanley S. Klimsky, 86, died May 2, 2007 at Villa Maria in Fargo. He was born September 1, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY to Kzimierz and Rozalia Juszkiewicz Klimczewski. He worked as a ranch hand in Montana, and had also worked with traveling carnivals. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in North Africa. He was held as a POW for over two years. He had worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps. He came to Fargo in 1999. He enjoyed reading, especially Louis L'Amour novels and World War II related books. There are no known surviving family members. Interment was at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan by Boulger Funeral Home.
VALLEY CITY, NORTH DAKOTA: Corrine Mildred Bjerke Larson, 93, died May 15, 2009. She was born May 29, 1915 to Christ and Minnie Maasjo Bjerke. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA: Donald N. Lothspeich, 81, died May 2, 2008. He was born January 17, 1927 to Edward and Rose Dirkes Lothspeich. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He formerly worked for Peavey Lumber, and retired from Simonson Lumber. He was a member of the American Legion, and was a life member of the VFW and the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife took care of foster children. REGENT, NORTH DAKOTA: James Ira Matheny died December 13, 1945 in Regent, ND. He was born February 28, 1873 in Cottonville, Jackson County, IA to James Harvey and Marilda Lusetta Stevens Matheny. He married Martha Augusta Spillers (born on December 15, 1873) at Kent City, MI. To this union were born five children, Martha, Ira, Jr., Ruth, Eleanor, and Gordon.
GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA: Florence Meshefski, 90, died February 27, 2007. She was born May 6, 1916 to John and Francis Stygar Duray. She and her husband farmed near Drayton and Bowesmont. She is survived by two daughters, Judy (Alvin) Thornton of Grand Forks, and Diane Meshefski of San Diego, CA; a son, Harry (Carol) Meshefski of Mesa, AZ; 5 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Meshefski; a son, Mark; her parents; a grandson, Greg Thornton, five sisters, Blanche, Stephanie, Nettie, Salley and Dorothy; and seven brothers, Englebret, Bruce, Casmer, Richard, Dominic, Frank and Florian. LIDGERWOOD, NORTH DAKOTA: Mary Novak died July 3, 1944. She was born in Budulis, Bohemia on June 24, 1860. She and her husband had eight children. She was survived by her husband, Frank Novak; three daughters, Vlasta Ellingsen, Sister Veronica Scheleny, and Emma Danek; and two sons, Frank Novak, Jr. and James Novak. Burial was at the Bohemian Cemetery.
MEDORA, NORTH DAKOTA: Audman Nunn, 75, died January 3, 1952 at a hospital in Miles City. He was born May 25, 1876 in Dundas, Ontario, Canada. He was a former cattleman and rancher in Medora. Survivors include his wife, Hattie M. Hoadley Nunn; six children, Ruth Andrews, Leighton Nunn, Donald Nunn, Gerald Nunn, Annanelle Ziebarth, and John H. Nunn; a sister, Mrs. C.M. Halgrem; and 15 grandchildren. Burial with Masonic rites was at the Custer County Cemetery under the direction of Bray Mortuary.
TOKIO, NORTH DAKOTA: Florence Onebear, 80, died March 26, 2006. She was born October 8, 1925 to Jacob and Martha Crow Onebear. She worked at Mercy Hospital and Sioux Manufacturing, and also in nursing homes. She enjoyed making star quilts. He is survived by his wife, Sunni White Lightning Plenty Chief; three daughters, Erin Jade, Emerald Jasmine and Eden June, all of Fort Yates; two sons, Elias Jonah and Eric Jay Plenty Chief, Jr., both of Fort Yates; his parents; two sisters; Rolanda Uses Arrow and Yvette (Kenny) Eagle, both of Cannon Ball; his adopted parents, Loretta and Roger Bissonette, Sr. of Nebraska; his adopted sisters, Lori (Kevin) One Horn of Cannon Ball, and Yvette Pretty Feather of McLaughlin, SD; four brothers, Erwin (Colinda) Plenty Chief, Sr., Ira and K. Riley Plenty Chief, and Robin Uses Arrow, all of Cannon Ball; an adopted brother, Roger Bissonette, Jr. of Wolfe Point, MT; six nieces; and nine nephews. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Myrtle Cotton Wood; his maternal grandmother, Cecelia Martin; his maternal grandfather, Samuel Fasthorse; three aunts, Audrey, Mary and Pauline; four uncles, Fenton, Wayne, Mike and Alton; a brother, Roland Leo; and two cousins, Shayne and Sunny Boy. Services were held at the Youth Activity Center. Burial was at St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery under the direction of Perry Funeral Home.
FARGO, NORTH DAKOTA: Alberta Marie Umsted Reger, 88, died April 23, 2003. She was born April 8, 1915 to James and Anna Marie Brundien Umsted. She was a graduate of Valley City State College, and was a former rural school teacher and substitute teacher for the Catholic Schools Network and the Fargo Public School System. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, and volunteered with the PTA, Shanley High School, St. Anthony's Church, Campfire, and the St. John's Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing and growing roses. Survivors include a daughter, Grace (Ron) Plath of Davenport; a son-in-law, Frank Hodgman of Claremont; and 3 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, R.F. "Riney" Reger; a daughter, Rayma Hodgman; a sister, Fern Wright; and two brothers, Ray and Harry. Services were held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Burial was at St. James Cemetery with arrangements by Boulger Funeral Home.
JAMESTOWN, NORTH DAKOTA: Georgetta Wellman Rumer, 87, died May 27, 2003. She was born March 23, 1916 to George Albert and Etta Mae Miller Wellman. She formerly worked at the courthouse in Valley City, and farmed with her husband for 35 years. She attended St. John's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing cards and traveling. She is survived by a son, Arlen (Kay) Rumer of Wimbledon; two daughters, LaVonne (Vernon) Anderson of Jamestown, and Carol (Jack) Davis of Tucson, AZ; a sister, Fern Rumer of Valley City; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Christ of Jamestown; 9 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl Rumer; a sister; and two brothers. Services were held at St. John's United Methodist Church. TURTLE LAKE, NORTH DAKOTA: Delores Rygh, 80, died July 24, 2009. She was born July 20, 1929 to Henry and Tena Honcharoff Skorick. She earned a teaching certificate from Minot State Teachers College, and taught in rural schools. She was a cafeteria cook for Turtle Lake Public School for 30 years. She enjoyed quilting and crossword puzzles. She attended Turtle Lake Baptist Church, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Shereen (Terry) Thunshelle of Bismarck, and Annette (John El) Rust of Mercer; a brother, Delwin Skorick of Billings, MT; a sister, Joyce Volochenko of Minot; a sister-in-law, Alice Skorick of Mesa, AZ; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; her cousins; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. Roy Rygh; two brothers, Leonard and Edward Skorick; and her parents. Services were held at Turtle Lake Baptist Church. UNDERWOOD, NORTH DAKOTA: Elaine Doris Hoppe Sayler, 71, died October 26, 2006. She was born August 30, 1935 to Louis and Ida Schauer Hoppe. She worked as a cook for several local restaurants. She is survived by her husband, Roy R. Sayler; five sons, Allen (Wanda) Sayler of Woodbridge, VA, Rodney (Linda) Sayler of Tulsa, OK, David (Janel) Sayler of Breckenridge, MN, Richard Sayler and special friend Corina Carroll of Horace, ND, and Ronald (Fiona) Sayler of Farmington, AR; 3 daughters, Barbara (Steve) Dentz of Carnation, WA, Diane (Myron) Schell of Underwood, and Susan Van Asperen of Bismarck; a sister, Janet (Dennis) Folden of Underwood; her nieces and nephews; 16 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. TOWNER, NORTH DAKOTA: Amanda Schiele, 79, died December 31, 1977. She was born March 21, 1897 in Denbigh. She and her husband ran a Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store in Towner. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth of Minot, and Ivan of Towner; four daughters, Violette Beckett of Minot, Helen Stucy of Bismarck, Norma Holmes of Berwick, and Carol Grove of Rugby; a brother, Henry Anderson of Towner; and 18 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Schiele; a daughter, Mavis; and her parents. Services were held at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial was at Union Cemetery.
GACKLE, NORTH DAKOTA: Martha Schlittenhard, 95, died August 3, 2006. She was born February 25, 1911 near Streeter, ND to Henry and Sophia Metzger Roemmich. She attended Grace Baptist Church, and was active with her church and community. Survivors include a son, Duwayne "Dewey" (Jeanne) Schlittenhard of Bismarck; four siblings, Edna Sheetz of Jamestown, Albert Roemmich of McMinnville, OR, Erna Martin of Tappen, and Henry Roemmich of Cody, WY; and a granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Schlittenhard; her parents; a sister, Amelia; and 4 brothers, Gideon, Walter, William, and Ervin. Services were held at Grace Baptist Church. KINTYRE, NORTH DAKOTA: Anton "Tony" Schlosser, 92, died September 16, 2007. He was born February 3, 1915 near Kintyre to Peter and Eva Kuntz Schlosser. He was a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Prior to his military enlistment, he worked with the CCC. He was a member and former trustee of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed horses, livestock, and four-wheeling. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Al Czeczok of Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kenny Schlosser of Kintyre, and Joe and Janelle Schlosser and William and Jackie Schlosser, all of Linton; a sister, Ann Rahrich of Bismarck; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Louie and Janice Schlosser of Bismarck, and Wendelin Schlosser of Strasburg; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Walburga Wald Schlosser; his parents; six sisters, Regina, Agatha, Dorothy, Barbara, Margaret, and Maggie; and four brothers, Sebastian, Mike, John, and Frank. Services were held at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Linton. Interment was at the church cemetery by Myers Funeral Home.
DEVILS LAKE, NORTH DAKOTA: William "Bill" Toso, 96, died August 1, 2009. He was born April 12, 1913 to Conrad and Ida Toso. He retired from the North Dakota State Highway Department, and formerly worked for Fairmont Creamery and Northern Seed and Feed Company. He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a longtime member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, and was a volunteer at Heartland Care Center. He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Evelyn Togstad Toso; two sons, Larry Toso (Lila) of Windsor, CO, and Lanis Toso (Kim) of Devils Lake; 6 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and eight brothers. Services were held at St. Olaf Lutheran Church. Burial was at Devils Lake Cemetery under the direction of Gilbertson Funeral Home.
MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA: Adolph Tulowitzki, 84, died August 1, 2002. He was born May 17, 1918 to Gus and Wilhelmina Tulowitzki. He was a retired rural mail carrier, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He attended the First Baptist Church of Minot, and was active in the Bible Crusaders. He was also a member of the Rural Letter Carriers' Association. Family members include a son, Jim Tulowitzki of Arvada, CO; two daughters, Jewel Wolhart and husband Cal of Jamestown, and Joy Tulowitzki of Bismarck; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Tulowitzki and Sam Tulowitzki; a sister, Elizabeth Tulowitzki; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alline Coulter Tulowitzki. Services were held at the First Baptist Church of Minot. Burial was at Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Palermo with arrangements by Thompson-Larson Funeral Home.
GRAND FORKS, NORTH DAKOTA: Walter Richard Vasicek, 81, died March 7, 2008. He was born July 6, 1926 to Albert and Rose Travnicek Vasicek. He and his wife owned several businesses in the Lakota area. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He is survived by three children, Kathy Rightmire of Pasco, WA, William Vasicek of Grand Forks, and Richard (Barbara) Vasicek of Pleasant Shade, TN; a sister, Mary Lou (James) Marcotte of Reynolds; 6 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty K. Benson Vasicek; his parents; and a grandson, Jesse Vasicek. Services were held at St. Mary Catholic Church. MINOT, NORTH DAKOTA: Albert Weishaar, 81, died September 30, 2002. He was born November 23, 1920 to John and Elizabeth Ackerman Weishaar. He worked as a journeyman plasterer in the Plasterers' Union Local #65, and later with Local #77. He also worked on the Alaska Pipeline in Prudhoe Bay, AK. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He attended Faith United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and growing dahlias. Survivors include his wife, Ruby Heinle Weishaar; four brothers, Adolph (Estella) Weishaar of Minot, Ervin (Ella) Weishaar of Wahpeton, and Arthur (Elsie) Weishaar and Bert (Alice) Weishaar, all of Benedict; four sisters, Alma Schumaier of Auburn, WA, and Irene (Clarence) Krebsbach, Esther Vitko and Hulda Mehlhoff, all of Minot; his nieces and nephews; his great-nieces and great-nephews; and a godchild, Stacy Turner of Eagan, MN. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carlotta; his parents; and two brothers, Willie and John. Services were held at Faith United Methodist Church. Burial was at the North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery under the direction of Thompson-Larson Funeral Home.
RAY, NORTH DAKOTA: Carlyle Conrad Wheeler, 85, died February 1, 2008. He was born December 12, 1922 to William and Mamie Wurm Wheeler. He raised grain, cattle and potatoes, and formerly worked in the oilfield. He enjoyed attending farm shows, especially the National Hard Spring Wheat Show. He served on many different local boards, and attended St. Michael's Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lila Allen Wheeler; three sons, Mike (Jan) Wheeler of Williston, Pat (ReNae) Wheeler of Burlington, and Tom (Lynnette) Wheeler of Ray; four daughters, Maye (Vernon) Jones of Minot, Faye Krogen and Beth Wheeler, both of Williston, and Tina (Brad) Gudvangen of Benson, AZ; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary; and two brothers, Vic and Herb. Services were held at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment was at St. Michael's Cemetery by Fulkerson Funeral Home.
